Day-to-Day Life at Yog Dham’s Teacher Training Course

Yog Dham’s Teacher Training Course Classes run from Monday to Saturday at Rishikesh Yog Dham . The day starts at six with jala neti kriya, a nasal cleansing process which rinses the sinus passage with saltwater. As someone who suffers from chronic sinusitis, this is a practice which I plan to continue because it eliminates my chronic headaches. 

At six-forty-five, pranayama class commences, where Bopendra Ji explains, demonstrates, and guides us through various breathing techniques with differentiated benefits. For example, some pranayama are for heating or cooling the body, while  others are good for calming stress and anxiety.

Breathing techniques in the early morning with an empty stomach have helped me immensely with my mood throughout the day, keeping my ‘monkey mind’ at bay! Nasal cleansing and breathwork in Bopendra’s calming presence is the perfect way to start the day! 😉

Following pranayama, we have morning yoga class at 07:30. Rishikesh Yog Dham owner, Arvind Ji’s guides students through a ninety minute intensive hatha yoga sequence which prepares students’ minds and bodies for the upcoming day.

Arvind Ji is renowned for his asana classes and corrections. In the time I spent there, my posture improved immensely; when I arrived, I could not sit on the floor for long without pain, by the end my chest had opened, my back straightened, and my general yoga practice improved greatly. His classes allowed me to release my pent up energy each morning, and left my body feeling subtle and relaxed.

At 9:15, breakfast is served. Classes commence from 10:00 until 12:00 for 200hr students, and 13:00 for 300hr students. 200hr students attend philosophy and anatomy classes, while 300hr students have ayurveda, anatomy and alignment classes.  

200 hour classes run from 10:00-12:00.

From 10:00-11:00, philosophy class unravels key yogic teachings which provide students with an insight into what yoga is actually about beyond asana practises. Nithin Ji is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced yogi who guides his students through various philosophical understandings of key components of yoga.

This includes definitions of yoga, philosophical principles, koshas (layers), hatha yoga, kundalini, chakras, patanjali yoga sutras or ‘mental modifications’, the eight limbs of yoga, pranayama, energy, mudras, asanas and bandhas.

From 11:00-12:00, Dipendra Ji’s anatomy and physiology classes combine theory and practice to provide an integrated learning experience for students. He educates students on nutrition, major body systems and their corresponding organs, as well as demonstrating exercises to activate certain muscles and muscle groups.

Dependra has a gift of breaking complex topics into bite-sized pieces, and he is excellent at giving comprehensive explanations for students’ queries. This class will leave students well-informed in the functioning of their own and others’ bodies, a cornerstone of quality yoga teaching and self-practice. Dipendra always has a smile on his face, lifting the mood of each room he steps into with his positivity.

300 hour classes run from 10:00-13:00.

From 10:00-11:00, Dipendra Ji’s anatomy and physiology classes in 300hr are guided by the theme of ‘health’ according to yoga and ayurveda, which requires balance throughout the body physically, mentally, socially, spiritually and emotionally.

He delves into the body’s systems in depth to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the body and its functions. He describes different movements of the body, connecting yoga postures with human anatomy and physiology. Through this, he deepens students’ body awareness through connecting science with practice.

From 11:00-12:00, Nithin Ji’s Ayurveda classes uncover the world of ancient Indian medicine, the most widely accepted and practised indigenous medicinal practices worldwide.

Students will learn about holistic health through understanding different body types, food, cleansings, body tissues, diagnoses and treatments for common diseases. While modern medicine tends to work on the symptoms, Ayurveda tackles the cause of disease, caused by imbalances in the body and its systems.

From 12:00-13:00, Arvind Ji’s alignment classes take a hands-on approach to alignment wherein students will learn the correct alignment for dozens of asanas on different body types. Students will learn about common mistakes and physical adjustments perfected over seventeen years of teaching.

At 13:00, lunch is served. Students are then free until 16:30 to rest, socialize, or explore the city. 

From 16:30-17:30, Bopendra guides students through various meditation practices, gradually increasing the meditation time each day for a seamless transition into the journey of self-discovery.

Each day, Bopendra introduces students to basic theory such as the nature of thoughts, chakras and meditation techniques alongside their effects on the body and mind. Through his calming presence, Bopendra holds the space for students to explore their inner worlds.

From 19:00-20:30 Prianka guides Ashtanga class, an active and dynamic form of yoga consisting of six set asana series. Students will focus on the primary and secondary series.

Prianka strikes the perfect balance between fun, laughter and hard work in her classes. She is clear and concise in her explanations, and she will push you to the next level if you are open to it.

Dinner is served at 19:40. After students are nourished with their final meal of the day, they are free for the evening.
